Bike Gallery supporting PUMP club

As has recently been announced the Bike Gallery is going to be supporting PUMP and other bicycle advocacy groups in a more direct manner.  Clubs that demonstrate that they have at least two programs in the area of safety education, support new cyclists, advocate for facilities, or encourage children to ride will be eligible to receive a grant of up to $1000 per year.  This is actually very good for PUMP as we try to build the club.  So, can you think of how we could use a grant of $1000?  Let the Board know!  Here is the text from a letter received from Barb Grover at the Bike Gallery corporate office.  (I have edited two minor areas).  Dave

June 27, 2008  Dear Shane and PUMP Members, Bike Gallery's numerous sponsorship programs have always aimed to support the local cycling community; however, with the recent completion of a strategic analysis of these programs, we have identified the need to improve our focus in terms of who we sponsor and how. Together with your valuable insight, we have crafted a new sponsorship philosophy that we feel better supports the efforts that align with our company values and advance our cycling community as a whole. As a result of our more focused strategy, we have created Bike Gallery's Bike Club Grant. Through this program, we are offering the opportunity for a yearly grant to local clubs whose activities reflect our own core values. A club may apply and receive up to $1,000 per year by demonstrating that it meets two or more of our criteria. More specific terms are available on request, but the basic criteria considered when awarding a grant are the club's involvement in:
  • Providing bicycle safety education to members or through outreach to the public
  • Supporting and encouraging new cyclists to start riding / keep riding
  • Advocating for bicyclists’ rights / facilities
  • Encouraging children through programs / child-friendly events
We feel that the relationship between the 10% merchandise discount we currently offer various clubs’ members and the benefits to the clubs and the local cycling community are generally vague. In accord with our more targeted approach to supporting activities that directly benefit clubs whose activities and programs enrich the community, we will no longer offer a 10% discount to PUMP members as of September 1, 2008. The Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) has taken a comprehensive approach to addressing the issues that are also top priorities for Bike Gallery: bike advocacy, safety, and education. Its work benefits all other cycling clubs, groups, and individuals in Oregon and beyond.  We believe that the BTA must grow its membership to be most effective and that supporting it through a member discount will help with that growth. For that reason, we will continue to offer a 10% merchandise discount to BTA members. We encourage your members to join the BTA, if they haven’t already. We appreciate the support you’ve shown us in discussing and shaping these changes, and we look forward to working with you to continue building our world-class cycling community. Please let us know if you have any questions at all.   Regards,   Barb Grover, Community Outreach and Marketing ManagerBike Gallery
