Sandy River Basin Public Input

08/05/2008 - 6:00pm
08/05/2008 - 9:00pm

Our chance to tell 'em what we want!

This is an exciting opportunity for Portland mountain biking. The BLM is proposing to construct potentially 30 miles of trail just outside of Portland in the Sandy River Basin and is hosting the following meetings below to find out what bikers want. At last week's PUMP meeting, two BLM planners presented info on the current plan and encouraged people to come out to the meetings as public opinion is going to significantly affect the trail construction. They mentioned that possibilities for trail styles could include rolling singletrack to man-made freeride stunts - it all depends on what people are interested in. The meeting is an open-house style setup so drop by when you can between 6-9pm tonight and let the BLM know what you think!

Located in Portland’s backyard, the Sandy River is an important ecological and recreational resource. The Bureau of Land Management, Salem District would like to invite you to a public meeting to provide input on plans for stewardship and possible recreation development in the Sandy River Basin. In the past 15 years, the BLM has acquired nearly 6,000 acres of public land in the area. Combined with existing holdings, the BLM Salem District now manages 14,850 acres within the Basin.

Participants are encouraged to attend either of two open houses to ask questions and provide their comments. The open houses will last from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and be held at the following dates and locations:

Tuesday, August 5
University Place Hotel and Conference Center
310 SW Lincoln St in downtown Portland
(503) 221-0140

Wednesday, August 6
Wildwood Recreation Site at the Pioneer Shelter
65670 E. Highway 26 (just west of Welches on the south side of the highway)
(503)622-3696

Directions (PDF)

We’re seeking your comments on:

  • A resource conservation and restoration strategy for BLM lands
  • Conceptual plans for proposed recreation facilitiesthat provide access to the Sandy River at the site of the Marmot Dam and the Sandy-Salmon River Confluence
  • Potential non-motorized multiple use trail systems for hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use in the Mount Hood Corridor

“The main objective of these open houses is to generate feedback about alternative management strategies and proposed projects from people who enjoy and live in the Sandy River Basin,” said Cindy Enstrom, BLM Cascades Field Manager.
