need some trail recs.

I have a friend coming in to town for OSCON. (I'm speaking there Wed. afternoon on "Running a Successful User Group", if you're attending!) We're going to do some biking the days before & after the con & I'm trying to choose trails.

Parameters:  2-4 hour rides, twisty singletrack with not much sustained climbing (IOW, Nestor Peak is right out. ;)   Trails he's really liked are the first section of Porcupine Rim (Moab) (last section, not so much) and the Tsali trail in North Carolina.  I've not ridden either of those.  Anybody here who has, and could give me some comparable trails around here?  I'm thinking 8-mile/Knebal is a good bet...anything else?

Well...

How about Siouxon Trail up in Warshington, or the Historic Hiking Trail in the Tillamook Forest. Both trails are fun and don't have a lot of sustained climbing. There's also the Riverside Trail in the Mt Hood Nat. Forest, along the Clackamas River. Not much climbing, has several switchbacks, many excellent views of the Clackamas, it's only about 4 miles long, and is open to bikes. I was just there today, and it's in great condition.

:slaps forehead:

:slaps forehead: Siouxson!  Right.  Duh.

Riverside sounds like it might be a good after-work ride?

"Why, yes, honey, I do love this bike more than you."

Yep...

it is. It's a great little trail, and is just over an hour drive from my swinging bachelor pad in Sellwood, or from my cruel and oppressive employer's sweatshop in Canby. To get to the trail: drive to Estacada, drive east on hwy. 224 about 25 or so miles. Look for the Rainbow campground on the right hand side of the road, drive into the campground and find a small parking area not far from the outhouse. The trail starts there.

The Riverside Trail is not part of the Clackamas River trail, which is closed to bikes. Actually, the proper name of the Riverside trail is: Riverside National Recreation Trail #723. You can find more info at http://www.trailadvocate.org/trails/723

You could also try Scappoose and the Hardy Creek/Molalla trails too. Not much sustained climbing at either place, and plenty 'o' singletrack funness.

Riverside Trail along the

Riverside Trail along the Clackamas...was that the same that has been closed for years?  Any Directions?

Thanks,

Porcupine Rim

There is some sketchy exposure toward the bottom of the trail.  I would guess that would be what your friend did not like.  The upper section is a more wide open fast downhill.

Falls creek would be good if the snow ever melts this year.

Trail 400?

I think it's trail 400 that goes through the gorge. I don't recall much climbing, but it has been many years since I road it and could have blocked that from my memory. I would call the local ranger as I remember the trail is prone to being overrun by blackberries.

Hagg Lake may be ridable by then. Definitely no sustained climbing. Fishing lures may be a problem. You'll have to pay an entry fee.

Surveyors Ridge and Timothy Lake

Surveyors ridge would also be an excellent fast paced but not too difficult ride.  A fun loop is Timothy Lake.
