forest park XC race, or any race?

Anyone else think it would be a fun idea to have a race in forest park, see if we could get use of some of the off limit trails like wildwood for the race?  an XC race, or?  There are tons of nice looking trails there, many of which don't have many hikers using them and I am sure lots of mt. bikers would love to ride them.  It would just be nice to have a annual occasion where mt. bikers own forest park.

Number Restrictions

Although that would be tons of fun, there are actually caps on the numbers of participants/observers (overall crowd) for all types of organized activities in FP. That is why there are no running competitions in the park either.

Also, there is a lot of built up/pent up anomosity amongst bikers and other user groups in the park that we are working hard to overcome. A hundred bikers/specators on currently off limits (forbidden fruit) trails would cause a backlash that would be counterproductive to our efforts. The perception would be that we had sights on taking these trails away from hikers rather than building new mtb or modifying current systems for biking use.

I agree it would be fun though.

I haven't lived here too

I haven't lived here too long, so i don't know the ins and outs of FP and the controversy.  Has a petition been made to the city? has the case been made that mt. bikers contribute more to the economy then hikers? that mt. bikers are making Portland dirty because they have to drive 45 min to get to any decent single track?  I hear of tons of people who visit Portland thinking it will be a great town for mt. biking then being very disappointed.  It is sad that such a close place to town is pretty much closed off for mt. biking.  to me it sounds like there is some bad bureaucracy going on here.

Run the WildWood Event

The annual Run the Wildwood event by my count had 279 participants this May.

Wonder how they get away with that.  I believe the restrictions only apply to cyclists ;-).

Forest Park Master Plan

Any current restrictions to cyclists are in the Forest Park Master plan.  It is posted on the our website for everyone to read.

It has been ongoing issue for years.  Things appear to be starting to change but slowly.  Anything that can be added for Mountain Biking must conform to the current master plan.
