Bear Springs Trap / McCubbins Gulch Area (Mt Hood)

05/31/2008 - 10:00am
05/31/2008 - 4:00pm

Recently there was an OBRA xc mtb race at Bear Springs Trap which is in the McCubbins Gulch area off Hwy 216 just past the junction of Hwy 216 and Hwy 26.

The trailhead parking area is a Northwest Forest Pass permit area about 19 miles from Goverment Camp. The meeting spot for this ride will be the Huckelberry Inn restaurant right in the main village area of Government Camp on Government Camp Loop road. We will meet at Huckelberry Inn at 10am and carpool out to the trailhead (about 19 miles away).

Because there was a xc race there just 2 weeks ago, the trails are in "prime condition" and there is a loop that I'm familiar with that is about 20 miles+/-. We can do more or we can do less, but plan on about 20 miles give or take. There's no water out there, so bring what you need.

The terrain is a really good mix of climbing, sweet twisty technical singletrack, double-track, OHV trails (which makes for some really fast burms and flowy turns), big boulders and small baby-heads, nice creekside trails, and more climbing.... oh, and did I mention climbing?

Anyway, I spent about 8 hours exploring and riding this area recently, and we could have a lot of fun out there... Yes, we might get lost or misguided from time-to-time, but we'll never be too far from familiar territory.

Please, please, please RSVP to me at northofcolumbia@yahoo.com if you are coming. I don't want to be waiting in the parking lot at Huckelberry Inn wondering who is going to show up at 10am on Saturday morning.

There's an ALTERNATE meeting spot at the Gateway Transit Center for those you who might wish to carpool from Portland to Government Camp.  Plan to depart from Gateway Transit Center at 8:15am to allow time to drive up to Government Camp for the 10:00am meeting time at Huckelberry Inn in Government Camp. I (Chris) will NOT be at Gateway Transit Center, so please don't expect to be looking for me at that meeting location. I will be at the Government Camp meeting location at 10:00am.
