Brown's Camp Memorial Weekend Ride x2!

05/25/2008 - 10:00am

Time for a Brown's Camp Ride!
(AKA: Roger's Camp)

JD & I hear this trail has come out from under its snow blanket and is ready for riding. Several folks have e-mailed us that they've ridden it over the last two weeks and it is in pristine condition! The long weekend will give us time for a Monday recovery.

Thanks to Shane, we will now have 2 ride options:

Ride Option #1 w/ JD & Shanti:
"Classic Roger's/Brown's Camp"
Most people know this as "Brown's Camp." Roger's Camp - Brown's Camp: It's the same ride.

This is about a 8.6 mile / 2-3.5 hr ride on fantastic singletrack though beautiful forest. It really does have a bit of everything: winding flowey singletrack where you can open it up, rocky and rooty technical stretches, and nice little drops for some XC air opportunities. There are some rooty climbs and technical bits, so a "beginner" won't have the "best" time. Nothing you can't hike your bike over though.

There was a re-route last year that eliminated our co-use with ATV's, so those who didn't ride it last year will be pleasantly surprised.

We are doing the highlighted loop marked as "Roger's Camp":

*This trail is now called the "Historic Hiking Trail" on the ODF maps

Ride Option #2 w/ Shane:

"Shane's Enduro"

This is about an 18 mile ride that will begin at the Gales Creek Camp Ground/Trailhead.  Folks on this option will ride Gales Creek, Storey Burn, the "Classic Roger's/Brown's Camp" ride (Ride Option #1), and back again! Wooo-hooo!  You'll definitely earn the protein fix of your choice on this one!

Here is just some of the enduro sweetness you'll experience with Shane's ride:

(Reference the map for "Classic Roger's Camp" for bottom of ride)

From Shane:

My ride will by going out Gales Creek and up Storey Burn.  From there we can option a short loop on Sickter Lars and then down Gravelle Brothers.  We then climb out and do the standard Brown's Camp [Ride Option #1] Loop.  We return by the Gales creek trail to Gales Creek campground.

The Meet Spot/Departure Time will be the same for both rides.
We will divide into Ride Options 1 and 2 and carpool accordingly.

Meet: We will meet at the Sunset Transit Center parking structure at 10:00 am (10:20 departure), get in carpool convoy configuration and go from there.

Carpool Riders: We really thank the folks who volunteer to drive with bigger rigs/racks. With gas at $4/gal, please take care of your carpool driver appropriately. We want these folks to keep steppin' up so we can all save some $$. What used to be $5 is now $12.

See you there!

8mi

Any suggestions, thoughts, or options for longer loops?  An hour of driving is a lot for a 8mi loop.

Milage

JD & I are doing the Roger's Camp ride off the ODF/TSF map, which is a slower, fairly technical and challenging 8.6 miles. Don't think "Hagg Lake-style 8.6" Most people call this Brown's Camp. In conferring with Shane, its the same ride. The trailhead is the Roger's Camp Trailhead.

Shane has stepped up to lead a hammerish/milage hound ride. Now there are options for everyone.

Dennis,

I do this in a figure 8 that nets about 12 miles. I dare you to do 2 loops! Or ride with Shane on the enduro ride, which is sure to make me bonk.

Browns Camp Name

I would like to know where the name started.  I first rode this 10 years ago and was told it was Brown's Camp.  I have heard it refered to HHT(Historic Hiking Trail) lately also which I  believe is also wrong.

My ride will by going out Gales Creek and up Storey Burn.  From there we can option a short loop on Sickter Lars and then down Gravelle Brothers.  We then climb out and do the standar Brown's Camp Loop.  We return by the Gales creek trail to Gales creek campground.

Falcon Guide is not correct

Shanti,

I believe the Falcon guide is dated.  They rerouted the trail a little over a year ago.  You do not cross the bridges anymore.  There is a single track reroute(Gravelle Brothers) that puts you on a road that comes up behind the gravel shed.  Much more fun than sharing a climb with motorcycles.

New "Classic Ride" Map

My Falcon Guide is the most recent, but has the old loop. The current ODF/TSF map is now posted above.

Ride Report - Classic Route

JD & I decided to go ahead with this ride despite the loads of liquid sunshine. We are so glad so many hardy riders did the same!

Evil Steve lead the Enduro ride with three other riders. (Thanks, StEvil!) They had big smiles on their faces when our convoy passed them. I am sure those smiles only got bigger.

We had nine riders for the Classic Roger's/Brown's Camp ride. Totally slick, muddy, and rockin'! The trail conditions took it beyond "Intermediate." We had some new riders with us and a fantabulous time was had by all. Upon G$'s suggestion, we did a little hike to the falls and got some fun shots of the crew. Absolutely beautiful.

I got some good pics and video that I'll be posting to our Flickr account and doing a ride blog with in the coming week.

Again, thanks to all who came out. Wouldn't have missed riding with you folks!

Shanti (& JD)
